ABSTRACT

The weakness of the ego structure of the Borderline adolescent makes it very difficult for him to control his destructive acting out. Furthermore, the persistent stimulation of his conflicts and therefore of his acting out by the parent’s pathologic behavior, and the basic therapeutic need for separation from the parent suggest that most of these patients require hospitalization to be treated adequately. Rinsley [108] doubts that initial outpatient treatment without hospitalization can ever be feasible.
