The term real self refers to the normal, healthy, intrapsychic self and object representations and their related affects. It functions alongside and with the ego to effectively adapt and defend in order to maintain a continuous source for the autonomous regulation of self-esteem as well as to creatively identify and articulate or express in reality the self's unique or individuative wishes.
