ABSTRACT

The use of imagery as a shaping device in sex therapy is developed by Nims (1975). Shaping is a technique used by behaviorists to teach a complex skill or response pattern. Learning requires moving from a previously learned or unlearned reflexive response to the new learned response. This is usually accomplished by the gradual addition of increments. Imagery is covert behavior within the central nervous system. Imagery is a normal component of sexual functioning. It refers to any thematic, sensory, ritualized, romanticized, or visualized accompaniment of sexual activity. A typical form of sexual imagery is fantasy. Subjects have reported sexual responsiveness due to appropriate imagery. Both men and women utilize imagery. Men are more apt to fantasize sexual scenes, while females report images around music, colors, and romantic themes.
