ABSTRACT

A family sculpture is an arrangement of people or objects that physically symbolizes emotional family relationships at a particular time. It identifies each person’s perceived place in the system. Each family member creates a live family portrait placing members together in terms of posture and spatial relationships representing action and feelings. The essence of one’s experience in the family is condensed and projected into a visual picture. Papp, Silverstein, and Carter (1975), and Duhl, Duhl, and Watanabe (1975) are among the many strategic therapists who use this technique extensively.
