ABSTRACT

The family floor plan is an expressive tool that provides important information about family systems and can be used as an intervention. Clients are requested to draw a picture of their home showing all the rooms. The technique was originally developed for use in the training of family therapists. Coppersmith’s (1980) view was that learning about one’s family of origin and sharing that information with others would assist trainees to acquire the necessary skills for professional competence. Later on the family floor plan was modified to be used with clients in therapy.
