ABSTRACT

Andolfi and Angelo (1982) describe this technique within the context of strategic family therapy: “The therapist enters the family system in the role of theatrical director who revises a play, … the family drama” (p. 119). The therapist is invited to accept the family’s paradoxical request to help them change without changing. It is theorized that this dilemma occurs as a result of the family system’s need for greater stability so that interactional patterns and individual functions become progressively more rigid and pathological.
