ABSTRACT

Just as there are many different family therapy theories, there are also many different modalities available to encourage behavior change. The modalities are developed by manipulating important variables. Some are made possible by available technology such as videotaping, one-way-vision mirrors, the telephone, the computer, and rapid transportation. Others are created by adding members to the system, as in co-therapy, multiple-couple groups, multiple-family groups, surrogate family groups, and family network groups. Similarly, the model can insist that all attend, work with the family through one individual member, or work with varying subsystems.
