ABSTRACT
Starting in 1972, I became a member of the research group called the Centro per lo Studio della Famiglia di Milan. The other members of this team were Drs. Selvini Palazzoli, Boscolo, and Cecchin. We were all psychiatrists and psychoanalysts with very active practices. Dr. Selvini and I had some experience in family therapy. For each one of us, psychoanalysis, as it was being used in family therapy, had become obsolete and ineffective. We began the search for a new idea which could deal with the family as a living system and produce basic, structural, therapeutic changes.
