ABSTRACT

We referred previously to the many dramatic changes that are occurring in the American population. The increase in longevity since 1900 is truly astonishing. Then, 4 percent of the population was over 65; today, the elderly constitute 12 percent of Americans, with greater increase expected. The baby boomers born after World War II will enter the ranks of the elderly by the year 2010. Already, the number of three-, four-and even five-generational families far outnumber what our forefathers experienced.
