ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses dynamic events that accompany the recovery process. Some occur early in recovery, that is, in the first 6 to 12 months. Other aspects develop throughout recovery but can be appreciated later. In this somewhat arbitrary division of “early” and “late” recovery dynamics, the process of ego maturation is paramount. In the early stages, strengthening of self-care skills (Khantzian, 1981) is emphasized, and in the later stage, emphasis is placed on maturation of defenses (Vaillant, 1971) and spiritual growth.
