ABSTRACT

The treatment offered in organized outpatient and inpatient rehabilitation programs (see Appendix B) provides a core of knowledge, both cognitive and affective, and points the patient toward abstinence and recovery. Group process and milieu dynamics predominate at the expense of individual needs. The importance of meeting individual treatment needs is emphasized in this chapter, which outlines the use of psychotherapy, medication, and monitoring. These specific treatments add to and complement the structured approach of rehabilitation programs.
