ABSTRACT

Anatomic structures are seldom completely discarded as creatures evolve into more advanced life forms. For it is inherent in the process of evolution that outdated organs are “recycled” and adapted for the new purposes and needs of the emerging species. Thus, gills became ears and lungs, and fins turned into limbs as creatures climbed out of the ocean onto the land, and forelimbs evolved into wings for flight when creatures took to the sky. However, beneath the feathers, the wings of birds still retain the same set of bones that evolved into paws in terrestrial animals, and eventually into our very own hands and fingers.
