In chapter I I presented four perspectives from which managed care can be understood: functional, systemic, conceptual, and operational. Chapter 4 noted that from an operational perspective, managed care constitutes a substantial revision of the process of providing behavioral health care, and reviewed the first three stages of that process:

1. Request for service. 2. Initial referral call. 3. Preintake paperwork completion.
