To set treatment goals that are effective within a managed care context, it is important to review some of the conceptual shifts that managed care has brought to the behavioral health care field. As noted in chapter 3, one of the major differences between managed care and indemnity treatment models involves the emphasis that managed care companies place on efficient treatment. MCOs generally see brief treatment as the most efficient therapy, except when specific circumstances or dynamics clearly justify longer treatment regimes. Therefore, you will generally find treatment authorizations ranging from five to eight visits.
