ABSTRACT

In zone 1 problems, children and families often respond well to focused interventions using an integrated combination of treatment approaches. These interventions maintain a flexible focus on the triad of therapeutic goals defined here: supporting healthy relationships within the family, developing a way to achieve active mastery of the difficulty within the child and family, and suggesting methods to lessen the experience of symptoms. Each therapist will use his or her own personality and trained instincts to develop a creative mix of exploration, psychoeducation, behavioral management training, family therapy, the insight into underlying dynamic or emotional conflicts, or all of these to resolve the problem and prompt new solutions. Even when the therapist uses a model that constantly reassesses the movement promoted by the use of each of the three approaches, there will be cases in which there may be little progress seen.
