ABSTRACT
This statement regarding suicide assessment interviews can be said to apply equally well to psychotherapy with suicidal patients. The clinical approach to the conceptualization and treatment of suicidal behavior is a relatively new development. As such, the art and science of psychotherapy with suicidal individuals truly can be said to be in its infancy. The quantity and quality of literature on suicidal individuals, while substantial, pale in comparison to the research and clinical literature on various other clinical phenomena, such as anxiety or mood disorders. Moreover, writings about suicidal individuals have had much more to say about risk assessment and the psychodynamics of suicide than about specific and concrete therapeutic interventions that a clinician may use to lower the probability that a patient will commit suicide.
