ABSTRACT
In these verbal reports, treating analysts follow ideas as they occur, without concern for logic or meaning. Frequently diverted from the original goal, they may contradict themselves, sound incomprehensible, or even confused. In the transcribed verbal report (Appendix A), many statements appear as grammatical errors. Exploration uncovered important meanings of these peculiarities of the analyst's language, some ofwhich are parapraxis. Analysts who have listened to patients with free-floating attention now revive their emotional involvement with patients, which influenced the trend of ideas that emerged in analytic sessions. This aspect of the analyst's thinking during the verbal report is responsible for the abundance of new data.
