ABSTRACT

In this case presentation I will focus on my subjective reactions to the patient in some early sections of a 500-hour analysis, which were studied systematically in a consensual analysis with Dr. Windholz. This involved my recording of process notes after each analytic hour and weekly discussions of my reactions to the patient with the listening analyst remaining silent. After the analysis was terminated, we compared the process notes and the verbal reports . To my surprise, my verbal reports revealed many interesting distortions when compared with the process notes. Inferences were made about the meaning of these distortions and how they related to my reactions to the patient. I was amazed to learn how far my analytic behavior had departed from neutrality without my consCiOUS awareness.
