His lover had been pressuring him to marry and have a baby despite the fact that they were in an embattled relationship. This caused him great anxiety. Envious of his lover, he expected to acquire her emotionality, her friends, and her creative phallic power. He hoped I would prefer him to my other patients, thus restoring a mother who preferred him. Fearing the loss of his lover, he succumbed to her demands: several months into the analysis he precipitously married and impregnated her, he said, "to contain the possibilities of the analysis before opening them up."
