ABSTRACT

A year after the initial Rorschach in which he offered five “mountain” responses, took a 90-minute break to play, and then gave another five “mountains,” Colin was tested again (A. Schachtel, 1944). He now completed the test in a single sitting, albeit a brief one. On Card I he saw “a man with pinchers,” and on Card II, “a bird with pinchers.” Card III was “Peacocks. They are pulling something out of it and they are smack.” On the next three cards, he gave single, unelaborated reponses (“fountain,” “bird,” and “another fountain,” respectively), before the curious response to Card VII, “Goal that pinches.” Becoming more volatile on the last three cards, Colin engaged in “playful fights” with them. As he hit each colored spot on Card VIII, he asserted, ‘That's a bang, bang, bang. Tigers walking all over it. A fountain.” On Card IX he continued: “I hate that. That's a pound, pound, pound, that pounds people's heads. A hammer.” And, on Card X, he exclaimed, “I hate that broken-down tree. See where it's chopped off?”
