      ABSTRACT

The normal adult is faced with the task of understanding the workings of the mind. In terms of affective development, the two developmental tasks for relatively healthy adults are to recognize the vicissitudes of affective experience in everyday life and to observe and discriminate the various levels of affective processing. I argued in Chapter 1, however, that many normal adults fail to ever address the issues of understanding the workings of the mind and becoming conscious of affective processes, because for many normal adults, mastery of the stages along the continuum of affective development remains incomplete. Therefore, the question of disciplined self-observation was raised as a means to facilitate both progression along the normal line of affective development and mastery of its phase-specific tasks.
