Over the years I have thought a great deal about how careers in medicine are developed. Because of the path that my own career took, I have been curious to learn how people determine where they are going, what their interests are, and how they are going to pursue their own personal goals. Although there are notable exceptions to the following generalization, I believe that it is almost impossible to predict in advance what the course of your professional life will be and where you might end up.
