ABSTRACT

ali has returned to harvard. she is a freshman. She has begun analysis. In this chapter I present two sessions from the beginning of this analysis, then two from the middle phase, a year later. In the opening phase, she appears to be doing a two-generation reconnaissance on the subject of fathers. I have said that girls need to teach their fathers the mother tongue. But girls also learn from their mothers what to expect from their fathers. And this means a girl learns from her mother how the mother went about teaching the father the mother tongue, that is, if she were able. As we discover, in Ali’s family, unspeakable terror interfered with this teaching, and that legacy has been passed down.
