ABSTRACT

The Final Case Is That Of a woman whom I treated for about four years in weekly psychotherapy, with continuing sessions at lesser frequency over the last few years. Her symptomatic presentation revolved around prolonged indecisiveness concerning an intimate relationship, which ultimately was revealed to be part of a longstanding pattern of anxious avoidance. Bridget's symptoms seemed to connote vulnerability to fragmented states and avoidance of potentially threatening situations. They also reflected a compromise in which she found herself unable to move closer or get more distance and tried to negotiate this crippling ambivalence by attempting to stop time.
