ABSTRACT

I 7.1 English civil liberties Traditional English law textbooks dealing with civil liberties address a wide range of issues under headi ngs such as freedom of expression, protection of privacy and perso nal liberty. Within th ose broad categories are found more detailed discussion of freedo m of speech, the law of con temp t, pro tection from offensive speech, official secrecy and freedom of pro test and assembly. Liberty here also refers to freedom from arbitrary arrest, pro tection whilst undergoing police quest ioning, and in respect of one 's property. To make it clear, however, the scope of this chapter is mos tly, altho ugh not entirely, limited to what comes within the scope of Art 5 of the ECH R.
