ABSTRACT
Freedom to associate and assemble has special relevance to employment. The need for workers to protect themselves against powerful exploitative employers was recognised both domestically through the growth of trades unions and via the International Labour Organisation (ILO) , the 'tripartite UN agency that brings together government, employers and workers of its member states in common action to promote decent work throughout the world' according to its website (referenced at the end of the chapter) .
