ABSTRACT
In Chapter 1 we showed, with an illustration from the animal laboratory, how chance effects can disguise the presence of a systematic relationship between the independent and dependent variables of a research study. We now return to this problem as a basis for a continued discussion of the nature of behavioral research and the role of inferential statistics in the analysis of research data.
