ABSTRACT

Human nature interests me because it is my nature. My interest in the rest of nature is always tinged with this personal reference, whether I recognize it or not, for we can see the surrounding world only through human eyes, and our apparatus of perception is at best an imperfect instrument. We look at human nature, too, as spectators, but we also have the unique ability to look at it from inside the works. The extraspective and introspective methods of observation have equal scientific validity, and both methods are subject to… erroneous interpretation. To understand human nature and so learn to control behavior for our own good, each of these components of experience—the objective and subjective—must be examined separately and in their reciprocal relationships.
