ABSTRACT

Educational programs to prepare counselors have evolved over the past 100 years. The roots of counseling can be found in three movements that began to occur just prior to the turn of the twentieth century. One movement was the vocational counseling which involved helping young people to find jobs. A second movement was the growth and development of psychology and psychotherapy, where people who were having mental problems began accepting help from others who had begun to specialize in these areas. The third movement was the area of psychological testing. World Wars I and II created great need for the use of psychological tests and, as a result, brought a more general acceptance of such testing.
