ABSTRACT

The terminology used regarding accreditation in student affairs areas is different than in other areas of counselor preparation, because different standards were initiated at three different times—prior to 1988, those in 1988, and 1994. The various programs are somewhat different and reflect the professional work to be performed upon graduation. The accreditation terminology and number of accredited programs in the U.S. in 1999 are as follows:

1—Student Personnel Service in Higher Education—Counseling emphasis (Prior to 1988 Standards)

6—Student Affairs Practice in Higher Education—Counseling emphasis (1988 Standards)

3—Student Affairs Practice in Higher Education—Developmental emphasis (1988 Standards)

1—Student Affairs Practice in Higher Education—Administrative emphasis (1988 Standards)

24—Student Affairs Practice in Higher Education—College Counseling emphasis (1994 Standards)

9—Student Affairs Practice in Higher Education—Professional Practice emphasis (1994 Standards)
