ABSTRACT

The history of counseling starts in the late 1890s and early 1900s. Growth at first was small but during World War I counseling became more widely recognized as the military began to employ testing and placement practices for great numbers of military personnel. The counselors who did exist at that time were working primarily in schools. Their preparation was generally rather limited. When counselor preparation programs were developed they generally offered only Master’s degrees, and the title of the major was frequently “counseling and guidance.”
