ABSTRACT

The San Diego project was designed to evaluate the effectiveness of providing comprehensive support services coordinated with independent housing (subsidized through Section 8 Certificates) as a method of stabilizing homeless indiVIduals with serious mental disorders in the community. The project was unusual in the level of publici academic collaboration: implementation involved close cooperation among San Diego County Mental Health Services (SDCMHS), San Diego State University, San Ysidro Downtown Mental Health Center, Episcopal Community Services, the San Diego Housing Commission and the Housing Authority of San Diego County. The project was designed to be collaborative in an attempt to address the wide ranging needs of the homeless mentally ill population through interventions that were designed to be responsive to their special needs.
