ABSTRACT

Many of us live In eities. Cities are centres of political, economic social and cultural Interaction. Depending on howyou see and experience them, eities can be exciting and stimulating places, fuli of promise and possibility. Or you can find them unpleasant: congested and crowded, polluted, impersonal and dan-gerous. ‘City life’ and ‘country life’ are old rivais, and most people have a elear idea of which theyprefer in general In this chapter we shall concentrate on the former, since the concept of ‘country life’ is in many ways a particularly British one. Some of the vocabulary in section IV of Day 6 (Meeting up with friends) is also relevant in this context.
