ABSTRACT

The articles belong to a closed set of small words known as determiners. They are used with nouns to link them to a particular context or situation. Besides the articles, the determiners include all those words, like the demonstratives (dieser, jener, etc.), the possessives (mein, sein, etc.) and indefinites (einige, etliche, etc.), which are used to determine nouns and typically have fi rst position in a noun phrase, before any adjectives, as the chart below shows.
