IntheplayMemoria,2writtenbyElseMarieLaukvikanddirectedfor theOdinTeatretbyEugenioBarba,twostoriesofpeoplewho survivedtheconcentrationcampsaretold.Thefirsttellsofyoung Moshe,who,almostdyingofcold,isstandinginthesnowin Mauthausenwithothernakedprisoners,answeringaninterminable roll-call.Butamemorycomestohim,amemoryofhisrabbiandofa songheusedtosing.ThatmemorysavesMoshe,whodancestheold songuntilhecanbreaktheicethatimprisonshisfeet,anddefeatcold anddeath.ThesecondstoryisoneoflittleStella,witnessingthe Nazis'assassinationofherrelativesandfriendsinhervillagein Galicia.Shehidesinaholeintheground,wheresheremainsforeight months.Inthathole,amongrats,hermemoryfreezesinadesirefor vengeance;butwhenliberationcomesandsheseesapublicexecution ofNaziofficers,thatvengeanceappearsincapableofrealmemory: vengeancedoesnotreachbackintothepast,itremainschainedtothe uncontrolledscreamsoftheexcitedcrowd.Broughtupshort,Stella drawsback,andindoingsoperceivesthatonlybydistancingherself fromthepresentcansheretracehertruememoryandhertrueself.
