ABSTRACT
The Evanston campus of Northwestern University (NU) stretches along the shores of Lake Michigan, where buildings, old and new, stand amid shrubs and lawns and tree-lined paths, many in sight of the lake. Some students and faculty moved quickly and purposefully along the paths, while others strolled slowly, lost in thought, or on warm, dry days sat or lay on the lawn. It was—and is—a beautiful campus, a self-contained garden of learning set apart from the city itself.
