ABSTRACT

Arriving at UCLA, we applied for veteran’s housing, but no apartments were then available, so we were put on a waiting list. Instead, we found an almost brand-new, very comfortable one-bedroom apartment on National Boulevard across from vacant land only a few minutes drive from the UCLA campus and downtown Westwood Village. We furnished it for a few hundred dollars by buying new but flimsy furniture at a discount store for three rooms—dining room, living room, and bedroom. As flimsy as the furniture was, it served its purpose, and we had wasted no time shopping since everything was included (even a crib for Sharon and a small desk for me—the store gave us some choices and allowed additions to the standard package for small extra charges).
