ABSTRACT

This chapter carries out a study of the market conditions in the industry going back in time more generally about twenty-five years and more specifically about seven to ten years. The former related to estimates of production, and to the patterns of distribution, pricing, and diversification of models in the ten product groups selected for analysis in the industry. The latter was in terms of market shares, ownership of the products by consumers, patterns of distribution, product development, the organizational structures of several companies, and details on the business background of a number of high-level executives manning these structures. The chapter also carries out a comprehensive pilot study extending over nearly two years. The conditions prevailing in the country when the research was carried out precluded large-scale studies to a considerable degree; the necessary funds were simply not available.
