ABSTRACT

BACK at the University of Chi-cago I found three job offers waiting for me. The first was to continue as a research assistant under Dr. Louis Wirth at the university, the second a position with the federal government, and the third a teaching post at Fisk University. Without hesitation I accepted the latter job. Fisk was a Negro college; it would give me an opportunity to see what I could expect if I continued my work in sociology, as teaching positions for Negroes were available only in Negro institutions. Nashville was not the Deep South, like Tuskegee; Fisk maintained as high standards as any Negro institution. A year's teaching experience would be good for me. I could then decide in which direction I wished to go.
