ButRousseauattemptstoindicateanotherwayofrestoring freedomor,rather,ofachievinganewkindoffreedomavailablenottoone,nortoaselectfew,buttoall.Thematerial dependenceofeachindividualcitizenorfamilywouldbereducedtothemostmodestrequirementspossible,andtoavaried agrarianeconomy.I f materialdependencecannotbecompletely avoided,itsdangerousnessshouldbereducedifthefamiliesand individualscanatleaststartoutasequalaspossible.Noone shouldbeintheposition"ofhavingtosellhimself,"andnoone shouldberichenough"tobeabletobuyanother."Thefar moreimportantspiritualdependenceuponconfirmationandrecognitionshouldbebrokendownbyequalrecognitionofallon thepartofthecorpsp o l i t i q u e . Wheneverycitizenisacknowledgedinthis,hishighestdignity,bythecommunityofallthe citizens,hisneedforrecognitionwouldseemtobefundamentallyfulfilled.Theambitionsofindividualsbeyondthisaredivertedtothewayofpatrioticdeeds,whichisequallyopento everyoneandinwhichitisnotsomuchthenaturalandgratuitousdistinctionsoftalentandabilitythatcountasthemorally meritoriousintention.
