ABSTRACT
IntheworldofJohnStuartMill,theRomanCatholic Churchisnottheleastoftheenemiesofhumanfreedom.But tohisextraordinarycontemporaryandfellowLiberal,John Acton,theChurch,ratherthanbeingtheenemyoffreedom,is thebeareroftherequisitesofthatfreedom.I t isthroughher thatthemessagehascomeandthegraceshavepouredtomake freedomspringforth;anditisthroughher,asthevehicleof theHolySpirit,thattheideaoffreedomwillunfoldinits developmentthroughtheages.LordActonsawnothingincompatiblebetweenthefreepoliticalinstitutionscherishedbyMill andtheworkoftheChurchintheworld.
