ABSTRACT
John Casteen became president of the University of Virginia in August of 1990. An alumnus of the university, he taught at the University of California, Berkeley and the University of Virginia before becoming the secretary of education of the state of Virginia in 1982. In that post, he supervised reforms in higher education and in secondary education, directed the desegregation process for higher education, and initiated state support for research.
