ABSTRACT

Mary Sue Coleman assumed the presidency of the University of Michigan in August, 2002. Before coming to Michigan, she served as the president of the University of Iowa for seven years. At Iowa, she led the institution in a successful effort to increase the national recognition of the quality of the university, raised private funding for construction that transformed the campus, and worked with the faculty to improve the undergraduate experience. Prior to that, Coleman was provost at the University of New Mexico from 1993-1995, vice chancellor for graduate studies and research at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill from 1992-1993, and associate provost and dean of research at UNC Chapel Hill from1990-1992.
