ABSTRACT

Since Oberlin was founded in 1833, its population has consistently contained a much higher percentage of Negroes than does the typical Ohio town. In 1950, 24.5% of Oberlin's population were Negroes, whereas only 6.5% of the population of the entire state consisted of Negroes. The relative Negro population seems to have declined slightly in the last decades of the 19th century, but since then it has increased slowly.
