ABSTRACT
I n this paper I w i l l review the ethnographic material for Tikopia in rela tion to the following four propositions contained in Hsus 1965 article and compare my findings wi th his interpretation of traditional (pre-communist) Chinese kinship and culture. I shall stay as close as possible to the intent of the Hsu hypothesis as I understand it .
