ABSTRACT

This chapter begins the examination of the Catholic Worker Movement in 1984. The external rituals are those actions which the Catholic Worker performs as a collective and help explain its reason for existence by providing services to the outside environment. These aspects are offered first in order to provide a context in which the components of authority, ideology, organization and membership of the Movement will be examined and analyzed. The Catholic Worker movement has a history of action in a wide range of pacifist activities over the last fifty years. Throughout the history of the Worker movement, a soup meal has been served daily for one and a half hours to the street people. In 1981, the Hayes Amendment was passed which demanded that the city of New York provide shelter for all the city's homeless people. Several people are interested in Central America, several interested in political persons, some people are concerned about nuclear arms and others on hospitality.
