ABSTRACT

But when it comes to what is to go into such a course, let me speak in warning. You have two-semester hours, maybe three. To have three semester-hours for Jurisprudence is like having three semester-hours for the LL.B. course in Law. Make no mistake about that. Jurisprudence is as big as Law, and bigger. And as a teaching matter, it is twice as big, because a student gets not what you tell him, but what he goes and gets out of the telling, and makes his own. He has to think it through, test it out, make it his own; and to get him to do that is slow going. In three semesterhours you can scratch a bit in one corner or two corners. Jurisprudence as a whole subject, you will never even get to looking at.
