IthasforsometimebeentimewehadthisbookofProfessor Hall's.Whenanyphaseofcrime-controlistalkedabout,the tendencyhastoooftenandtoostronglybeentoemoteinstead ofthinking.Somecriminologistshaveindeedtalkedgratifying sense;andfromthemDr.Hallhaslearned.Somepracticalmen haveactedsense-theyarethemostnumerousgroupwhohave. Some-fewer-practicalmenhaveeventalkedsense.Professor Hallhaslearnedfromthemaswell.ButabouttheCriminalLaw neithertheonegroupnortheother(tosaynothingofthe lawyers)hasdonemuchtalkingofsense;bstillless,aboutthelaw oftheft,whichistheheartofthereallycriminalCriminalLaw. Yetnotonlycanwenotgetalonginthismatterwithoutlaw; wealsoneedvigorouschangesinourlaw-changeswhichcanbe diagnosedandunderstoodonlybystudyingthesocietythelaw purportstogovern.
