AndthedevastatingeffectofsuchThey-waysofreadingeachparticularincidentpilesupintermsofthemultitudeofincidents whichcometosuperficialnotice,whichcomedevoidofany healthybacklogofcontactatfirsthandwithanadequatenumber ofpersonsoftheparticularThey-category;whichcomedevoid, aswell,ofanyhealthybacklogofrecurrentdiscoverythatthe sloganized"They"pictureshandeddownwithintheWe-group haveprovedwithsomeregularitywhentestedinactionandactual contacttobedistortedcalumnies.OnerecallsLincolnSteffens' amazementanddistressasthepoliticalbossesagainstwhomhe wascrusadingturnedoutsoregularlytobepeople-peoplewho insomanywaysplainlyearnedhisadmiration.Thustherapid modernincreaseof"news,"evenapartfromanydeliberatedistortion,becomeslessareducerthananincreaserofanygroupprejudiceswhichhavebecomeorganizedintointegratedandcurrent sloganizedwhole-patterns.Insomeaspectsthe"conquerorof distance"inthephysicalsensetendsrathertoincrease"social" gulfs.(Incontrast,someofthecontinuingradioprogramscan developcontactenoughwithgroupsdifferentfromoneselfto bridgegaps-ifonewillonlylistenregularlytosuchprograms depictingone'sThey-groups;asdosomeofthecomicstrips, whichIsuspectgetamuchlessselectiveaudience.)
