ABSTRACT
While denunciations are an essential feature of court hearings,
their outcome does not depend solely on the content and tech-
nique of the denouncer's presentation. T h e success or failure of
denunciation also hinges on the nature of the response made by
the denounced. Thus , a delinquent in the court setting can em-
ploy a number of strategies to try to stave off possible discrediting.
